I find this particular news to be hilarious because Windows 10 had problems out of the gate. It’s 2017 and reports are still filing in on users who were either forced to install Windows 10 or installed it on their own consent whose hard drives no longer work.
The latest story comes from over 100 users in the Illinois area who are suing Microsoft for the damages done to their hard drives. The complaint was filed last week and states that many users rendered their computers unusable after agreeing to install the Windows 10 update.
Courthouse News reported that one user actually had Windows 10 installed without her consent. She took her PC to geek squad and they could not recover her hard drive after Windows 10 bricked her PC. Another user says he did install on his own will, but it rendered several of his programs useless and caused data loss.
A Microsoft spokesperson told Courthouse News “We believe the plaintiffs’ claims are without merit.” Microsoft went on to defend the free upgrade, calling it “a choice designed to help people take advantage of the most secure, and most productive Windows.” It added that customers had the option to refuse the upgrade, as well 31 days to roll back to their old operating system after accepting the update.
If it was still 2015, I would be a little more lenient to the side of the users who can no longer use their computers. It’s 2017 and minus the one case where it was installed without her consent, the others have to own the risk in upgrading in my opinion. At the same time, if there any other factors that would prevent Windows 10 from installing properly (older hardware), Windows should not even give you the option to upgrade. Who do you think is more at fault in this situation?
