The writing is on the wall for E3 ladies and gentlemen. At this point I look at this convention the same way I view Gamestop; just waiting for it to collapse. A relic of a past era. Things are only getting worse too. Sony took to social media to announce that they will not be attending E3 2020. This is a big deal because everyone knows they plan on revealing the PS5 soon. Many speculate that Sony plans on hosting its own event similar to Nintendo. One could argue Nintendo was ahead of their time when they first started doing Nintendo Directs.

Why pay millions to have a booth at E3 just to compete with other big-name companies for attention? It’s cheaper to cut out the middle man & host your own event online via Twitch & YouTube where you can communicate directly to your fans. E3 news often gets leaked earlier too. The reason being is press receives “press kits” a little ahead of E3 announcements and some parties just can’t follow the rules. When you host your own event you can contain the leaks and if something does leak you know it was internally. Sony released this statement to the public.

“After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020. We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year. We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.”
