Three years ago Discord hit the ground running and took over the voice chat service. They’ve made services such as Skype and Teamspeak obsolete and irrelevant with their quality audio, video and security features. Still no option to record conversations within Discord like Teamspeak, but we can continue to hope and pray for that feature.
One new feature that will soon be implemented is the option to purchase games from within Discord. According to our snitch, the beta is currently rolling out to 50K Canadian users today with the intent to release to everyone else later. Currently, you can purchase Saints Row: The Third, Metro: Last Light Redux, Super Meat Boy, Hollow Knight, and Starbound with more games coming.
At first it sounds like they’re going after Steam, but instead, they want to provide a different experience. They’re offering games curated by Discord employees. I guess they’re going for a more tastemaker vibe that could rival something like Humble Bundle. Discord also plans to release indie titles first on Discord in a new program they’re calling “First On Discord.” All Discord users will be able to purchase games, but their Nitro users (paid customers) will have access to more.
It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out. Seems like they want users to remain within their ecosystem for extended periods of time. That could happen if they would just let us record conversations from within the app at the click of a button. I’m salty.
