Marvel’s Daredevil Season 2 came out earlier this year and one of the standouts from the new season was undoubtedly the anti-hero The Punisher. The character was portrayed by Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, The Wolf of Wall Street) and his portrayal of the character was met with acclaim from both fans and critics alike. Fans immediately began voicing their desire to see the anti-hero debut in his own spin-off series and while Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb initially stated that no spin-off had yet been discussed that seemes to have changed.
Today, Marvel and Netflix announced that a Punisher spin-off has officially been order by Netflix! Jon Bernthal will return to reprise his role as the titular character and Hannibal executive producer Steve Lightfoot will serve as the main showrunner for the series. He spoke on the announcement stating:
“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil. Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”
Netflix Vice President of Original Content Cindy Holland also spoke on the series and Jon Bernthal stating:
“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world. After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”
No word yet on when the series will begin shooting but we’ll keep you guys updated on any new developments. Let us know your thoughts on the newly announced Punisher spin-off!
