A five year study conducted by the German Sports University in Cologne has shown that eSports Professionals experience many of the same physical strains as professional athletes. Professor Ingo Froböse and his team were surprised by results showing many ways eSports professionals were performing higher than sports stars. “The eSports athletes achieve up to 400 movements on the keyboard and the mouse per minute, four times as much as the average person. The whole thing is asymmetrical, because both hands are being moved at the same time and various parts of the brain are also being used at the same time.” On the subject Professor Froböse stated, “in my opinion, eSports are just as demanding as most other types of sports, if not more demanding.”

To put into perspective the hand-eye coordination with the keyboards are more than what a professional table tennis player uses

Tests were also conducted to look at the levels of stress hormone cortisol in the eSports professional’s bodies and it was found to be of similar level to race car drivers. Combined with a high pulse the strain on the body was similar to running fast.

Of course this is just one study but having a sports university even conduct such a study shows the immense popularity of eSports as a whole. Personally no amount of studies can convince me they are legit athletes but I would be lying if i said i wasn’t happy that gamers have made gaming competitions this popular.
