YouTube’s biggest problem is it has a monopoly on on-demand video. A lack of competition can make you complacent, and that’s just what they’ve become. I could go on all day about the various issues that plague content creators and viewers as well, but we don’t have that type of time. Instead, let’s just talk about the positive move they just made for the community.
Yesterday YouTube rolled a new feature on their app called On The Rise. If you open up the YouTube app right now & head to the trending section, you’ll spot content creators being highlighted a few videos down. According to the plug, two different content creators will be featured daily. To qualify to appear in On The Rise, you only need 1k subscribers and hope YouTube picks you out of their millions of creators. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.
I just find it funny that they announce this feature a day after Facebook announces mid-roll ads for their videos. Content creators being able to make money on Facebook now means YouTube is competition with someone who is actually a threat. Can’t forget Vid.me is on their ass too. Do y’all think they’re feeling the heat? Below is what One The Rise looks like inside the app.
