Shenmue 3 has been delayed until “the second half of 2018” stated director Yu Suzuki. He admitted the game would need longer in development.

“It’s been over two years since we began this incredible endeavor together. By utilizing new technologies, we have been able to discover new possibilities and expressions. In many ways, the game has become bigger and more beautiful than I initially expected. We do, however, need more time to deliver the game to you. “In order to achieve the game concept you supported and my 16 year-long personal dream, we have revised the development schedule. We are moving ahead with a plan to release the game in the second half of 2018. Details will be revealed in the backer report later this month. Thank you very much for your understanding and continued support.”

While delays on Kickstarter projects are common, this was a game I looked forward to being done on time considering it made 4 million over the 2 million dollar goal. You can read the rest of the blog here

My feelings are maybe this delay is a good thing. Kickstarted games get knocked when rushed and with a named franchise I’m sure the pressure to deliver a masterpiece is something Yu would like to achieve even if it means multiple delays to get it right. With that said the pressure to deliver a great Shenmue game is higher so let’s see if the new possibilities and expressions pay off. Let’s also hope the delay won’t be a recurring theme. In the meantime I still have my Dreamcast ready to play Shemnue to kill time.

Thoughts on the delay? Disappointing or is waiting OK considering for us Shenmue fans waiting is all we’re used to at this point. Let us know in the comments section.
