Original works in anime are a rarity. Many studio’s would rather adapt works from previously existing material such as Manga, Light Novels or Visual Novels. adapting from other works have a higher chance of success in the studios eyes, being that they have an already existing fanbase. Although most of the time when an original work does get released it usually is a step above the rest. The studio would have more freedom and creativity with the story, instead of trying to emulate and stick to the original source material. Anime such as Anohana, Cowboy Bebop, Gurren Lagann and Neon Genesis Evangelion were all original works and are considered must-watches by most anime fans.
Now a new original anime titled “ID-O” has been announced. Some big names are attached to it like the director behind Code Geass, and the mechanical character designer behind the newest Gundam series. The first trailer of it barely shows anything about what the series will be, but it looks to be a mecha space-opera series.
Let’s just hope it will be more similar in quality to most Gundam shows than to Knights of Sidonia. Little is know about this new series, and no release date is set yet, but the names behind the series give me hope that it will be good
