The upcoming film adaptation of the insanely popular video game series Assassin’s Creed has had several problems during its development, including several delays (it was, at one point in time, supposed to release this month). Today, we got our first look at this film and a reminder that hey, this is actually happening. Below is the first photo of Michael Fassbender in the theatrical film. He will be playing a new protagonist, Callum Lynch, not Desmond, Altair, Ezio, Arno, or any other assassin from the games.
Fassbender’s Callum Lynch was created specifically for the film. The movie won’t be retelling any of the games’ plots, but instead its own story. Fassbender will be playing the modern-day protagonist and the assassin in the past, probably so the film doesn’t confuse moviegoers. “Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.”
A couple of months ago there were rumors that Alicia Vikander would appear in the Assassin’s Creed film, but that didn’t end up happening. Last year, Robert Downey Jr. was rumored to appear as Leonardo da Vinci, but now that almost surely won’t happen.
The Assassin’s Creed is expected to release December 21 of 2016.
