Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange film is undoubtedly one of the studio’s biggest gambles to date, with it being Marvel’s first film to really immerse and base itself in the realm of magic. Oscar nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Redbelt) was rumored to have secured a “key role” in the film, however, neither him nor Marvel had cared to comment on the subject.
It appears now that the rumors were in fact true as Deadline reports that the actor has been selected to play Doctor Strange’s arch-nemesis Baron Mordo. The outlet also stated that his character might not be the film’s main antagonist as his version of the character will be an amalgamation of multiple characters in the Doctor Strange comic book mythology, done in similar fashion to Iron Man 2, in which the character Whiplash (played by Mickey Rourke) civilian identity, Anton Vanko, was paired with Whiplash, which in the comics is a separate Iron Man villain. This may allude to both Strange and Mordo’s characters initially starting out as allies in the movie and then showing the latter eventually become evil.
In the comics Baron Mordo’s character first make his debut in ‘Strange Tales #111’ as the trecherous student of The Ancient One (who will be played by Tilda Swinton in the film), who was exiled after his planned attempt to betray Doctor Strange and The Ancient One. Unlike Strange, Baron Mordo makes use of the dark arts and demon summoning magic, both realms that Doctor Strange believes no one should delve into.
Doctor Strange is said to follow the story of neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions. The film is set to hit theaters November 4, 2016.
