It seems like it’s been a hundred years since Gamestop turned a profit. Nobody goes to that store to buy anything. Think I’m joking? Go to your local Gamestop and walk around the facility. Then tell me it doesn’t look like a mini Cleveland? There are old games for sale, toys, and trinkets all over the floor, kids running around sneezing and fighting. Gamestop is a scary place in 2020.
They need a hero and they think they found one! According to our snitch, Gamestop recently hired Nintendo legend Reggie Fils-Aime as an independent board member. He begins his work with Gamestop on April 20th. Gamestop’s CEO released this statement to the public
“The Board refreshment and governance enhancements announced today represent an important milestone in GameStop’s transformation as we continue to evolve the Company’s business strategy for long-term success. We are pleased to welcome Reggie, Bill and J.K. to the Board. They are each highly qualified and bring significant, relevant experience to our turnaround.
We look forward to immediately benefitting from their expertise and perspectives as we navigate the evolving gaming and retail environments, execute on our strategic initiatives and prepare the Company to maximize value-creation associated with the next generation of console launches later this year.”
I’m sure Reggie can strengthen Gamestop’s relationship with Nintendo, but I’m not sure what else he can do? It’ll be interesting to witness what he brings to the table? Will he push Gamestop to go all-in on the experience vs just sales? Only time will tell.
