I recently just started posting videos to my youtube channel with the hopes of it helping my career in videography and cinematography which led to a mobile game asking me to promote their game. I had no interest at first until they offered money so I decide to test the game out before I give a definite answer. I will refrain to name the game or the amount of money, but it wasn’t enough to buy anything too fancy but good enough for a channel my size. Needless to say, I will not be making a review for said game because at the end of the day the game didn’t sit right with me. The game was about a topic I enjoy however the actual genre of the game is just uninteresting to me as well as the game REALLY encourages you to purchase in-game content. Even after playing the game and disliking it I contemplated still making a review where my dislikes outweighed my likes, but the final straw for me that made me straw away from making the video was when I went on YouTube to view other’s opinions on the game and every video I saw was sponsored by the company and no one had a negative thing to say. At this point I was thinking there is a slim chance that if I articulated my thoughts well enough where I addressed my problems with the game I could still submit my video despite I’m basically calling this game shit. Then it dawned on me that why bother even promote something I don’t even like for a paycheck? I would have liked the money, but it would have meant me sacrificing my integrity and going against my beliefs.
That was the back story that led me to my epiphany that I can’t be a YouTube sellout. After I decided to not do the video and inform the company I still kept searching on YouTube for videos about the game and I ran into a big YouTuber’s channel who was also sponsoring the game. I didn’t like their video either, but I continue to look on their channel and almost one out of every 3 videos I clicked on showed that YouTuber was sponsored by a company, not including them advertising their equipment that they use in the description. I want to write and direct movies so I understand the need for product placement but for almost every video to show a new or reoccurring sponsorship for a company is the definition of a sell out to me. The production value of this YouTuber’s videos isn’t even of high quality either that requires a high payout to keep up production. YouTubers put the “You” in YouTube so for multiple companies to have their hands all in a YouTuber’s pockets really messes up the entire concept of “for you by you”. I’m not saying I will never do a partnership or sponsorship with a company or two but If every other video I do is me promoting someone else’s idea then please by all means call me out. For me personally I can’t cosign products or people I don’t truly resonate with such as the game mentioned earlier. However, companies like Bioware, Bloody Gaming, and Mac computers (not all apple products) where I have been sold on their quality and usefulness are things I can get behind. So if I had to end this article with a message it would be, be true to yourself, don’t do things just for the money, and call it how you see it.
