FOX first announced last year that they would be expanding their X-Men franchise with a brand new trilogy following X-Men Apocalypse, which will focus more on the new, younger mutants team. Reports also surfaced that FOX was planning to develop a spin-off X-Men film, although no further details were given at the time regarding what team of mutants the film would focus on and who would appear in said film.
Deadline came through today with exclusive news, revealing that the FOX spin-off is indeed moving forward and that it will focus on none other than the “The New Mutants” team. Still no word on what mutants will make up the team, although Deadline added that the film will star “a new crop of mutant characters born with special powers.”
The movie is set to be directed by Josh Boone (Fault in Our Stars), who will also co-write the script alongside Knate Gwaltney. Producer Simon Kinberg spoke to Deadline about the film and stated:
“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”
The New Mutants first debuted in 1982’s “Marvel’s Graphic Novel #4”, which featured Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot and Wolfsbane, all of them new to the Xavier’s School of Gifted Mutants as heroes in training. The series introduced and featured many lower profile mutants, although some fan favorites such as Professor Xavier, Magneto, Kitty Pryde and Deadpool have appeared in the series, the latter of whom made his debut in New Mutants #98.
The film is set to debut sometime in 2018. Are you excited for this new spin-off? Let us know in the comment section below.
