While Avengers: Age of Ultron is still taking over the box office, Marvel has already started focusing on “Phase 3” of their Cinematic Universe, mainly the highly anticipated Captain America: Civil War film. Production for the film has officially started today in Atlanta, and with it came an official press release from Marvel which revealed both the official synopsis of the film and the massive ensemble cast. The synopsis of the film is as follows:
“Captain America: Civil War’ picks up where ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.”
The film will boast arguably the most impressive cast in any Marvel film to date, with several surprise addition having been revealed at the press conference. The film stars Chris Evans reprising his role as Captain America, as well as the return of several Avengers such as Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as War Machine and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch.
New additions to the cast include Paul Rudd reprising his role as Ant Man, Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Emily VanCamp who previously appeared in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, Frank Grillo as Crossbones, William Hurt returning once again as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross from the 2008 Incredible Hulk film, and Martin Freeman in a mystery role.
Captain America: Civil War will once again see the return of co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo, and will be produced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, with Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Victoria Alonso, Patricia Whitcher, Nate Moore and Stan Lee also on board as executive producers.
