Boss Key studios and Cliffy B dropped an interesting bomb on us this week when they introduced a new game they were working on called Radical Heights. This is a Battle Royale game with an 80’s theme to it. The colors are very vibrant, the character models are over the top, and it has a game show theme to it. Cliffy B already took a major L with Lawbreakers, so will Radical Heights succeed where their previous game failed?
I got a chance to play the game (currently free on Steam) and I had a very bad experience. I know the game is early access (labeled at Xtreme Early Access), but I feel like not everyone should have the chance to play this game in this state. It gave me a very bad first impression. The game was highly unoptimized, there are bugs all over the place, loading into the game is a pain and a half, and the graphics are atrocious.
I would say one of the positives is the gunplay. I would describe it as a mix between PubG and Fortnite. It has a sweet spot in the middle where it’s not too hard to shoot, but at the same time, your shots actually hit accurately. It also has unique aspects like a “spin the wheel” mini-game in the middle of combat.
The game has potential seeing as the BR market is currently the latest trend in gaming. I still believe in Cliffy B, but I don’t want this to be strike 2 for him and Boss Key. The game obviously needs a ton of polish and fine tuning before anyone should take the game seriously. I also don’t necessarily like that Boss Key seems to be chasing trends. We will see what happens as this game gets closer to their Beta stage.
