I don’t even know how to start this, honestly. I suppose we’ll start with the news. Originally, 2K said that career save files on the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game would still be playable when NBA 2K14’s servers shut down at the end of March. 2K Sports told Polygon that “online files will not disappear, but rather they will turn to offline saves and earn skill points as opposed to VC.”

They lied.

Polygon has reported that “a form response 2K Support has been sending users” has told players that their save files have been “retired.”

2K Sports said that, via Polygon, “this means that if you had created a MyCareer or a MyGM online save file that was once connected to our servers it too sadly has retired and is no longer available for use and it would be necessary to re-create these files as offline saves.”

“Sadly this may come as an inconvenience to some of you and if so we truly do understand and can feel for how upsetting this may seem as there always is a special bond that occurs between a player and their MyCareer save but all good things must come to an end and rest assured your MyCareer or MyGM went out while on top!”

“Basically, you can still play quick game and off-line modes.”

“We hope you enjoyed your amazing experience with NBA 2K14’s online services and you can look forward to the continue experience [sic] they provide in NBA 2K15!”

Oh, what’s that, you don’t speak corporate bullshit? Let me translate this for you: “Dear NBA 2K14 players, fuck you. We understand that losing your save files is upsetting and we know we lied to you, but, honestly, we don’t give a rat’s ass. ‘All good things must come to an end’ right? That’s what happened to your save files. They ended. Sixteen months after launch we decided that we would render all the hours you put into your 3x All-Star, 2x NBA champion OVR. 99 point guard wasted and all the money you spent on VC leveling him up wasted as well. We’re not making the game completely unplayable, no, just everything that you had previously done is now gone. You can still play MyCareer mode, just you’ll have to start over. However, why don’t you go buy NBA 2K15 before we shut down its servers?”

Alright, 2K, you’ve gone and FUCKED it up.

I’m sure I don’t have to explain to you, dear reader, how wrong this is. There was no reason in the first place that the MyCareer game mode (and others) should have needed online connectivity. The terrible decision made those save files unplayable when 2K14’s servers were having issues (which was fairly common) and now they are gone forever.

Gamers are now worried that this same incident will happen when 2K shuts down NBA 2K15 servers (probably a year from now). Polygon said they reached out to 2K Sports for comment and will update their story when they receive one.

I really wonder how 2K will respond to this. They lied to consumers, let their save files be deleted, and then 2K slaps those consumers square in their faces. How will this affect the longevity of NBA 2K15’s servers? I’ll tell you now, they better be running for more than sixteen months. What about other 2K games? Think of the shitstorm 2K will face when they shut down Evolve’s servers in a couple years…

I have lost all faith in 2K and will not buy another NBA 2K product until 2K shows me that they have gotten their shit together. For fuck’s sake, they’re making EA and Ubisoft look good right now.

To conclude, fuck you 2K Sports.
